This is a pic that really helped me in the last couple days to lay out the windshield frame. Its really incredible to think George Barris was able to customize the 66Bat from the 55 future in a three week time period.

He didn't. All Barris did was the afterburner and some small stuff. All the metal work was done by Bill Cushenbery. According to the contract he signed with Greenway he had five and a half weeks to deliver the car. Cushenbery was the one with a three week time table. I know some fans of Barris are going to be really shocked when my book comes out.

In checking out the 1966 Batmobile its hard not to spend a little time checking out the 1955 Futura concept car. The design lines were out of this world. Some of the things that caught my eye was how the grill and bumper melted into the wide side trim going all the way to the rear bumper. I immediately thought I wanted to build a Futura but really who other than other batmobile fans would know what it is. One of the toughest feature to duplicate is the steering wheel with the speedometer in it. The steering wheel turns but the speedometer stays stationary. I went on a couple forums as I thought I had figured outa way to make it work. There were guys who have made it work and even some ancient pics of how Ford did it. The 1966 batmobile is roughly the same length as an 89 batmobile nineteen long but the wheel base is much shorter at 127" verses the 141 inches of the 89.

I initially was thinking of the donor as anything but a Ford. But many of the kits are adapted to the Lincoln Continental Town car. I guess the Barris fiberglass replicas were built on Ford Galaxy chassis. So Im guessing they must have stretched those chassis. These were just some thoughts. Thanks for looking. BWD

The steering system in the Futura was a clockwork style setup. While the wheel turns left, the binnacle actually turns right at the same rate, making it appear as if the binnacle were stationary. This was told to me by Stan Thorwaldsen himself, the man who designed the interior. The three Fiberbat's Barris created were on '65 Galaxie frames, stretched eleven inches. Hope this info helps.

Thanks futura, I am all for accuracy. The truth will set you free!!! Recently I had the pleasure of talking to Barris Himself. My business partner and I had brought the dash plates in hopes of having him sign them. As we sat listening to the master hehe I asked him a couple question. I ask him did it really only take you three weeks to build the 66 bat? He said no I did it in 3 days. Lol well alrighty then. Next question what do you think about all these guys copying the 66 bat? He said I think it's wrong. There should only be the batmobiles I built and that's it! I slyly grab the dash plates in my partners hands and said I got to go fill the meter. Lol
I'm telling you there are so many half truths and outright lies in this industry. People claiming this and that. I guess it's a need to feel important but it's pretty sad.

I am presently moving forward on the 66bat . I recently found out my sisters cancer has returned and it has taken a lot of the air out of my step. I haven't been all excited to make videos or even take pics. I do find a lot of comfort in fiberglassing. Today I fiberglassed the roof panels of the miniT , gel coated 4 complex molds of the Lambo and finished the tedious pieces of the 66bat front clip. I'll try and load those pics soon. Thanks for checking my build out and listening to my reason for not posting as much .Thanks. BWD

Oh HELLO!!! You had the Tumbler and the '89 at SLCC this last fall, didn't you? I'm (one of the?) Hathaway Catwoman you let sit on the Tumbler for a picture. I am VERY seriously considering a '66 build myself, though I'm starting with the basics of getting a car that has the right specs. Sorry to hear about your sister, I hope she is doing well. I hope she likes your builds? They'd certainly cheer me up if I were ill. (But I'm a big Batfan, so... yeah *lol*) I'm loving your work so far.
