Hey BWD,

One more question. On my Tumbler build I posted some on avoiding burnout.

Then, I asked others out there for their opinions and experiences that helped them avoid project, build, and other sources of burnout. What keeps you going on your builds and other projects? What keeps you from quitting when frustration sets in on your builds and projects? What keeps going? Given your proven history, can you give myself and others, your opinions and secrets to avoid burnout? vertigo

Hey Vertigo, thanks for the question. It's been asked of me often. Being married has probably been my biggest challenge and best gift to myself. I've been married for twenty six years to my best friend and love of my life. We are as one. I say this to explain that. I build because I cannot stop. There are many times I have wished I could just go hiking or camping or any diversion but I cannot. Like my marriage fabrication is a part of me. An obsession. A process that gives my life value.
As I was building the Rumbler the financial pressure and time requirement became overwhelming. I had gone to church as I often did and my pastor John had asked me as he often did how was my build coming. This time my answer was very different. With my head low and my motivation exhausted I had to tell pastor John I had given up. I could not finish it. He took me to the side and asked me why? I had all the excuses 2 years into the project with no end in site. $60,000 spent on parts and labor. I mean I had all the excuses an each excuse was relevant. He made a suggestion to me that changed my life. Something that showed me where to look for that lost motivation
He had thought about my delima and made the suggestion that I think of a cause that was important to me. Then to dedicate my build to this cause. Immediately I though of the military. My dad was 28 years in the Marine Corps and I was a Navy Veteran. I thought about those brave men and women that were sacrificing their time and lives for us.i wondered where do we get such fine young men and women that believe is something so strongly as honor, dedication, sacrifice, commitment. The Tribute Rumbler was born as a tribute to the men and women in our armed forces and the family and friends that support them. I started telling people about my tribute vehicle and had people started asking me when it's built could I bring it to their charity event. See here's the secret.... If you building the car to make you feel cool driving around town you may run out of gas before you can finish it. But if the reason your building it is for others you will not stop.we always do more for others than we will ourselves. The game of life is similar to baseball in that you have to get up and give it a try. You swing a miss that's a strike one. You step back up and with two strikes left you give it a big swing and crap that's strike two. Now this is getting serious so you focus and give everything you have and......here's where it's different in the world of fabrication and the core meaning of life. In the game of life only YOU can call yourself out. It's not three strikes but only when you chose not to swing that your out. I believe God has given each of us gifts to insure we are successful. Is it hard work? Hell yes! will it take a lot of time? Oh yeah! Will there be people including our loved ones that will doubt we can finish it. Everyday! Is it worth it? Well that's up to you. I've missed about 6 years of sitting in front of the tube watching other people live their lives. Be a finisher. Build as if your life depended on it. Never stop. Finish or die trying! The only difference between you and myself? There's no difference and here we go again. Never stop! never surrender! NEVER!!! Your humble friend, BWD

To all my CLTC friends and supporters I want to share a video very close to my heart. I hope you will follow me on Facebook under bat builder. I literally could not have accomplished these builds with out CLTC and thanks to DooHee for creating this site for us to meet and share. The Tribute Rumbler and the Crimefighter Extreme now wrapped in carbon fiber! Check this out wwwthepianoguys.com under Batman Evolution. Thanks BWD

Hey BWD,

Wrote a thread to encourage others to think about construction of Bat Vehicles and others. What do you consider the major skills you required to build your Rumbler, 89, Mini-T, and Mini-89? What skills do you think a new Bat Vehicle builder should have before starting to build a Bat Vehicle. Would I be wrong in placing welding and fiberglassing at the top? vertigo

Hey vertigo, when I started I wasn't good at fiberglass or welding. But I had a great interest in learning. I learned and continue to learn so much from YouTube from the good and even the bad videos. I think the more important trait you need to have is persistence. No one is going to care more about your project that you do. Learn to do as much as you can by yourself. And continue to read all these wonderful build logs. Hope that helps. BWD

Hey BWD,

In your many years of building, in particular when welding on your vehicles that had bearings, what precautions did you take to avoid arcs inside the bearings. The best information I have is stated below. Did he leave anything out in his recommendations to prevent arcs from occuring inside of bearings when welding.

A few days ago a casual friend of mine stopped by with his dad who was visiting from out of town. So as usual we went into my shop to talk about the Tumbler. Before long his dad and I were talking about welding. Turns out his dad use to work for NASA as an engineer who is specialized in metallurgy. So, I took the opportunity to ask him about welding on metal parts that contained bearings. "Three rules will protect most bearings, he said." (1) Isolate your project from all grounding out sources with non conductive supports or if using metal jack stands place non-conductive isolators under them. Also, keep your project and isolators dry. (2) Maintain the same length on your welding leads and do not use cables with cracks or compromised insulation. (3) Keep your ground lead clamp within 6-inches of the actual welding. Grind to bare metal before attaching your ground each time you move your ground. Use a heavy solid copper grounding clamp. vertigo

Hey Vertigo, with all due respect your making this harder than it has to be. You don't need a NASA engineer to tell you how to weld around a bearing. You can take all those precautions and probably never get your project done. Here's the simplified version. " Don't ground through a bearing". That's it! I kinda feel your either a smart guy or a guy who wants to project yourself as smart. If your going to grind your ground clamp contact every time your going to run out of metal lol.
The concern is if say your welding a bolt onto a rusty lug nut that is spinning it's not the best idea to ground to the chassis. As the electricity passes from the welder to its ground clamp it can pass through the ball bearings causing pitting of the polish surface. Is this going to be catastrophic? No! Should it be avoided? Yeah. Just stick the grounding clamp on another lug. I spent six hours welding an internal chassis on my 66 build today. Never grinded an area for the grounding clamp and didn't put a die electric insulator under the car. It's on tires! Oh yeah and it was even sprinkling a little lol. Best advice is put down the manual and start fricken welding. Hope that helps BWD

 Hey BWD,

Thanks for putting the bearings and welding issue into perspective and for the reality check. As for "I kinda feel you are either a smart guy or a guy who wants to project yourself as smart." I am not all that smart and at this time in my life I certainly don't care about trying to project myself as being smart. Being smart is really about the ability to learn while ignorance simply means something that someone is unaware of and both mean nothing if they are not relevant to achieving some specific sought after goal of personal value. In our short lives we will gain competence and maybe mastery in only a few areas and die ignorant of most things in the physical world. I knew very little about automotive vehicles a couple of years back when I decided I was going to build a Tumbler but feel I have since acquired enough working knowledge to complete my build. When it comes to building a Tumbler you are the smart guy and have proven your possession of the relevant required information by completing your Rumbler. Something few have been able to achieve. When the novice asks a question of the master how can it not seem somewhat contrived and trival having been personally mastered so long ago. LOL vertigo

Happy New Years ! With the New Years resolutions and all I've recommitted myself to moving forward with the miniT. My problem in the past is too many builds and not enough time as is the case for everyone. To stay on track I'm going to attempt to have only the miniT parts around. That way I hope to avoid the shine key syndrome lol let's make 2018 the best year ever. Big wave dave
