It would definitely be more of an issue with a smaller garage. I will have to take a picture of my garage when finished to see the "scope" of it. There are over 6 work benches in my garage alone. Each one has a different purpose. The ones with the hidden storage are the "island benches" there for light duty use, the surrounding benches contain tool chests and are designed for medium to heavy duty use as well as a steel top bench i'm working on right now for serious hammering.

Hey stevo,

Forgot to ask about the progress on your projects. I have greatly admired your work since you first started posting as have so many others who follow your work intensely. vertigo

I have been working on the next revision. So small update... I had to make some adjustments to the last Key FOB so another revision needed to be built. I added more interior room for the electronics, larger pillars for the screws and an additional button. I wasn't satisfied with having one button as most Key Fobs have at least 2. It also offers more functionality so one button can do lock / unlock and the other one can do Open / Close. I also have added in some redundancy. I put an RFID module inside the FOB so if the battery fails you can walk up to your tumbler similar to how Commissioner Gordon does in the movie getting really close. The FOB also has enough volume for storing a key (not a large one). I'm not sure what kind of ignition system goes with a crate motor or aftermarket ignition systems so I don't know that a full blown Car Key will fit but you could store a key that unlocks some other area on the Tumbler and get access to an actual key or unlock the canopy with it etc...

Here is Revision 3 of the FOB Not much different then the last one with the exception of the additions I talked about earlier (without color)

And here it is with some color. Still working on the color. It turned out more blue then I liked so it needs to be darker. Was hoping for a dark metallic grey but I missed the mark on that...

This will probably be the last revision to the Key Fob as I am mostly satisfied with its functionality to movie replica ratio ??? If I had to make any more changes I would make some changes to make it seal better. Most Key FOBS for Cars are razor thin and "snap" together. This one is larger then most so it could be done. At this point I would probably just do a poor man's waterproofing and encapsulate the electronics with an adhesive. The next big project I'm working on is the Center Console Screen. The one that sits on the arm rest and flips up / down. This will contain the tablet and communicate with the FOB and controller box and provide the animations for the Tumbler. The cost will probably be much higher for the case as it is way bigger then the Key FOB. Prototypes ain't cheap...Thanks for reading and sorry for the long post.

Hey stevo,

Key FOB looking great. What about modifying something like the Panasonic Toughbooks? When the Tumbler was destroyed in the second Batman movie wasn't the screen built into the dash that had all the warning systems/graphics displayed and flashing. The replica Tumblers I've seen the inside of don't seem like they would be able to easily use a flip over/down tablet. You probably already know there is Tumbler information on the inside of the cockpit on this site home page in the Tumbler section. Also you are probably also aware that the movie scenes showing the inside the cockpit were done in a specially made cockpit section that had a lot more room than the functioning Tumblers. Shaggy has a sketch up page that shows people figures sitting inside a see through cockpit of a functional Tumbler that may give you some additional perspective. vertigo

I'm trying to factor in as many things as possible. As you said there are a lot of factors here. I'm also keeping in mind a real cars arm rest dimensions. I may use a laptop in the end or even just a display and have a laptop else where I don't know...I will certainly look at the tough books. I like using a tablet because its small light weight has no cooling fans and doesn't need a power brick to charge and also has a small foot print due to lack of a keyboard which the movie didn't have. Its definitely a puzzle like the Key FOB. How do you make it real but the same as the movie... I would like to also make it perform a dual role of backup camera if possible but we will see...I think as you said the biggest constraint is the room inside the car. There isn't a lot of room in there especially if the car is scaled down. Its funny you mention the animations on the other screens. There are other screens that show the animations however I think in the dark knight when the tumbler is unoccupied the flip down screen shows the same animation on it as the other screens (I could be wrong) I just assumed the main console mirrored the other screens and visa versa. I'm also trying to think about the functionality of the screen if the fictional tumbler used by batman were real...

Finally got done coloring the key FOB it is a little dark for my tastes Not the shade of gray I was hoping for but Looks good enough for me.

I got to thinking about what animations show up on which screens. Turns out the 2 larger computer screens are mirrored or at least some times. The "console" computer and the large one just over the "gun canopy".

Batmobile

The first screen Im working on is the one on the arm rest. I put the screen size at 7 to 8 inches. Mine will utilize an 8 inch screen size diagonally. The reason I chose this dimension was due to size constraints. Once the casing is added it put the overall size somewhere around 10 inches or so. The arm rest width in my Jeep is roughly 8 1/4 inches wide in comparison. I believe the tumbler's is some where around 10 inches give or take.

Basically you have 2 options for hardware. One Use a touch screen monitor or 2 use a tablet. I'm going to try the tablet route first as I think there are more advantages. The pros of a tablet include power consumption, low heat dissipation, self contained unit, easily replaceable, can perform other functions, and the display is a much higher quality. I initially was going to use an lcd screen but the problem is the screen size. Small lcds exist however they are usually poor quality, not very durable, and not easily replaceable, and almost no support. I found maybe 2 monitors that would meet my requirements but they were still cheap and support is sketchy at best. The one advantage though is that monitors tend to have more of a portrait layout which is what you need versus a wide screen layout of a tablet. My goal is to utilize the tablet as the touch screen monitor itself through software and connect to another PC on the back end.

Below is the design im working on. Thanks to a new blu ray drive on my pc I'm able to pick up more details from each of the movies to help with the design. Below is the 3d model I'm working on of the display casing.

And an exploded view of the display casing:

Hey stevo,
Have you identified any of the movie's screens as modified factory screens or do you believe they were custom made?

My guess is that the screens used in the movie didn't actually work at all.

Most likely they were just green screens that were filled in after the fact. That would have been the easiest way to shoot those scenes

I think brcewayne is right. The screens were likely green screened and added post production. Not that real screens could not have been used however its just easier to add them later. I'm still looking in to a touch screen monitor as a backup plan if the tablet monitor idea doesn't work out. You could use a standard monitor however the idea is if its touch screen you can control the pc that is linked to it.

Turns out it looks like the displays are real. Based off of the interior set photo from the history of the batmobile. You can see the green screen in the background and the displays are lit up. Technically if they were green screens you would see green squares in there place.

Batmobile

Interestingly enough I'm thinking the displays are taller then they are wider....It's an optical illusion when looking at the display from this angle. The darker image from batman begins shows the displays better. I'm thinking the 2 displays are identical.
