Hello Everyone,

A friend of mine stopped by and was looking at my Tumbler project. After awhile he asked "How many pieces of steel are in the frame and how many hours do you have in this thing so far." I never really thought about it that way but later last night I did a rough add up. There are 63 piece of steel in the frame so far. Physical hours, including building and visits to the steel company/auto salvage yards add up to approximately 100-hours. Research/analysis/study come to approximately 1000-hours. vertigo

Hello Everyone,

Finished my research and study in search for flange bearings for construction of my Tumbler's front arms. I decided to use ball bearings over taper roller bearings for several reasons. My choice of ball bearing is able to tolerate 16 minutes or .005 inch of misalignment while maintaining normal contact. The equivalent roller bearing could only tolerate 3 minutes or .0009 inch of misalignment without bearing roller edge contact that would severely reduce the bearing life. Research also revealed that much of the global industrial markets have converted many of their applications from roller bearings to newer improved ball bearings. Also of note the bearing I chose can convert much of any unusual tension loads into radial loads without adding much to the thrust loading. These reasons are why I finally settled on the 2-inch, 4-bolt, stainless steel flange bearing unit SUCSF210-32 Each flange bearing unit has a static loading of 4430 pounds and a dynamic loading of 6080 pounds. Collectively, the four flanged bearing units have a static loading of 17,020 pounds and a dynamic loading of 24,320 pounds. This all said, I finalized my choice of flange bearings buy placing an order for four. vertigo

Hello Everyone,

Started breaking down the axle I bought for the Tumbler's front axles. The weight on the pallet is 580 pounds. Cut the axle apart to get the ends. Was pleased to see the axle tubing is 1/2-inch thick. vertigo

Hello Everyone,

On the physical construction I cut out my flange bearing frame brackets yesterday and now in process of pre-weld clamping up and alignment.

On the research and planning side I am trying to figure out the rear axle width, wheel mating surface to wheel mating surface. Best I have calculated is 57 inches. Anyone with thoughts on the correctness of this? Attached my dimension/calculating sheet for observation and review.  Also, trying to calculate the custom wheel adapter dimensions and wheel rims. They look like Eaton manufacture. vertigo

Hello Everyone,

Anyone know who made the steel rims for the original movie Tumbler or what kind of substitutes were used by replica builders? vertigo

Hello Everyone,

Gathered a lot of information for my Tumbler by netline searching from the known completed Tumblers outward. I searched for a year and hardly made a dent in reviewing what is available. Still search for information but around 93% is redundant in comparison to what I have gathered so far. vertigo

EXISTING BATMAN TUMBLERS

Christopher Nolan’s Movie Tumblers

A total of four full-sized Tumbler vehicles were built for the production of the film. Two full-sized driving versions were used in exterior shots while another full-sized model with hydraulic enhancements was used in jump sequences. A fourth full-sized, functional version carried propane tanks to fuel the rocket blast out of the rear nozzle.

Where are they now?

Replica Tumblers

Bob Dullam’s Tumbler resides in Michigan and is considered by many to be the most accurate replica.

Big Wave Dave’s Rumbler Tumbler is unique in that it is a four seat Tumbler and is located in California.

Grant Hodgson’s Tumbler was constructed in Australia and is considered by many as the most powerful with its 454 nitrous oxide injectors. It appears to have been sold to a Japanese businessman and to reside in a museum in Japan.

The Team Gulag Tumbler built by Parker Brothers is a street legal modified vehicle that was used to compete in the International Gumball Rally in 2013. Current location is unknown.

Marc Irvin’s Tribute Tumbler resides in California. It is mechanically finished and the body is currently under construction with completion expected by the end of 2014.

TOTAL VERIFIED:  9

Estimates on the internet for completed Tumblers worldwide range from 10-57. Anybody know of any others?

Hello Everyone,

This rear Dana 60 axle came from a 1973-1979 F-250 4X4 and has Dutchman 30 spline axles. In the future I plan to install 35-spline axles and a Detroit locker, similar system, or hybrid. vertigo

Hello Everyone,

Finished welding outer flange bearing brackets, drilled holes, and mounted the flange bearing units. Drilled inner flange bearing brackets and mounted the flange bearing units. Clamped inner brackets with mounted flange bearing units temporarily in place. Will align these with shaft run out in correspondence to the mounted outside flange bearing units and clamp securely in place. After checking everything a few more times, I will unbolt the flange bearing units and weld the inside flange brackets. vertigo
