What type or grade of steel are you going to be using for the front control arms?

A36 Hot roll, same as everything else.

Nice Find! only problem I see is that the rod ends arent spherical like a ball joint. Any idea how long they are? Good chance we can use them! Thanks[/quote]

I thought they needed to be joints. Weld a C bracket to the rear then put a grade 8 bolt through it. they are 2 ft long.

sorry long weekend just hit up the nearest tractor supply. see what they have.

Criminals are a superstitious and cowardly lot.

Looks good, but how are you going to handle the rear suspension with the transmission
Connected to the axle.

Like what you're doing, I'd like to see what you're rear suspension setup will be like... I'm always willing to learn.

Great start hope to see this to the end.  I'm looking at building a street legal version of the tumbler and also wanted to reverse the engine and transmission to a normal setup due to the excessive noise of the V-Drive.  If you watch the video when Jay leno took the batmobile for a test drive it was really loud in the cab....

If you don't mind me asking how long is your engine and transmission setup?  Also it doesn't look like there is much of a drive shaft on the end of the transmission what is the length on that? I'm curious how much space I would need if I decided to reverse the setup.

Thanks,

The most of that noise in the Jay Leno video was not the V-drive. That was the sound of the straight cut gears. Listen to an in car video from a rally race and you'll hear the same sound from the dog box.

Thanks for the info.  I'm not much of a car guy.  Is there an advantage to using straight cut gears? (this in the transmission?)  I'm assuming they used it for a reason?  I'm hoping to reduce as much noise as possible in the interior  (maybe some insulation in some places) I know its good to hear some things but when its so loud you can't hear yourself think it might take away from the enjoyment of the ride...

Straight cut gears are used in applications of severe abuse. They are much stronger and reduce the chance of breaking a tooth in the transmission.

The reason they put them in these cars is because they put them under tremendous abuse on the set. Essentially they were built like a race car.. better to put them in than have to deal with transmission failure in the pit

There's no need for straight cut gears in a normal street driving condition

So far, your project has me pretty geeked & wanting to see how it turns out! I was considering a similar set up. I've been a little hesitant because I was concerned about such a short driveshaft & suspension travel... Can't wait to see yours completed.

Hi there,

This is my first post on this site, and so far very impressed with the information available on it. So in looking at your reference drawing I thought I would send this in.
I have scaled a reference photo into AutoCAD from the Batmobile book and measured it against sizes referenced elsewhere on this site. I also found a very nice 3D model in Turbosquid and put it in for reference also. It looks like the dimensions work out fine.
