Mines the 180 230v with the Nascar Bshit on the side I think the duty cycle is 30% so you can weld for 3 minutes without it crapping out and you have to let it cool for 7. and thats at max settings I think need to check the interwebs.. I've never had it crap out on me , 3 minutes is a long time for me when welding, after my longest weld I thought my gloves were going to burst into flames things were getting so hot. you'll never need to weld anything longer than that, most of the time is prep work anyways and a small fraction is welding. and if you run too hot greater chance of burn through , use prep time to let the weld and welder cool.. and run multiple passes to increase strength instead of trying to get it all in one shot.. And please take all my advice with a grain of salt I'm stiil a youtube taught newbie later

I definately agree my gloves wouldn't be able to with stand the duty cycle on my welder either however that also makes my point. I have one of the lincoln 110 mig small welders too not a 180 (by small I mean smaller then the 180 the cheaper welders for around $300 I think) I think its one or two sizes smaller and the duty cycle isnt even close to the bigger 220 mig welder. If you plan on doing alot of welding during a period of time not so much constant bead welding you will spend way more time letting the little welder cool then actually welding and eventually will shorten the life or even fry the welder. I'm not saying it can't be done but if your going to do a budget build the one thing I would not skimp on is the welder I would definately make sure you have a welder that is matched for the job. Again just my two cents.

Yea search the web wait for a sale,if possible, I wouldn't buy used. I got mine for 600 bucks with a auto tint mask, the unit sells for over 800 now with no mask. and thats in the last year I've watched it go up, I check the price everytime I go into the store I bought it.... search youtube there is a review of everything on there Also if you go through Tims BlackBerry build he's done everything with a Lincoln 140 flux core he has also never welded before this project. so maybe power isn't everything.... later

yeah i think i've asked tim about it but he had told me that all the "real" structural stuff, the frame basically was outsourced. i know that the smaller welder he has is good for what he is doing but if i wanted to make a frame for the tumbler similar to big wave daves i don't think that would cut it. maybe when it comes time for the body panels.. another question, can you weld thicker metal just by using flux core wire and not gas or would i need gas no matter what for thicker material??

From what I understand you get deeper penetration with flux core. On the chart inside the welder for setting the material thickness power and wire speed it shows 1/2 inch using only flux core and not for gas. Again multiple passes are required.. They also suggest not welding outside with gas if there is wind. With flux you can weld in 25 mph winds.

it works fine outside, and you get a better weld with gas...ive welded 1/2 with both and the mig is the best
