Hey BWD, I agree, even with tires at around 39" (for a 10% reduced size build), it's still a lot of weight for a V6 to handle. I might be trying it though with a Chevy 4.3 Besides a limiter strap, shorter shocks in general might be necessary with a short drive shaft, to prevent too much upwards travel when compressed. Or really stiff springs.

Great info! I was building mine to be street legal. So my question is: is there is any information on this 10% smaller build?

It's good to see others take the sam route I'm trying. I'm doing a scaled down version as well to make it street legal (reducing the sketchup tumbler from Movie dimensions down to 8ft 6" width) I was planning on doing a reverse setup with a V-Drive. Shaggy was kind enough to let me use his sketchup files so it would allow me to build a mockup. I Built a mockup of my "scaled tumbler" out of MFD board and 2x4's to get a feal for dimensions and any potential problems. After building the mockup it doesn't look like their would be much room to do a normal engine setup. I didn't like the idea of sitting right next to the engine and loose a chunk of cab room when using the 350 (Truck) engine. I plan on using a used 1 Ton Dually pickup with a 350 and using the rear axle (will hopefully be heavy enough for the dually's. Also the tumbler has very poor visibility cameras are a must. I was looking at doing my frame out of square tubing as opposed to round tubing. The steel guys I talked with said structurally round tubing is stronger from all dimensions but square tubing was much easier to deal with and should be strong enough for a chasis. Anyway good luck and please post pictures of your frame when you them.

SuburbanKnight (8/30/2012) I found it here: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=9b859dc6ddc6b5dc6f48b04a2541e8a9 Im 99.9% sure that it is Shaggy's design. Sweet, you and I will have to share info on Street legal models.
Nope, not mine.
But i Know what you mean about "difficult", im in that stage as we speak.

Mr. Shaggy those are truly amazing skills you have with Sketchup... those may not be yours but those are almost as good.

Oh yeah, I definitely give the guy props, whoever built the Tumbler you are using, its extremely well detailed. The only complaint I have about it is that its not really accurate to the original, BUT thats only because I'm anal about that kinda crap haha! That aside, like I said, I give the guy major props for the work he did!!!

Shaggy is your framed chassis setup for a Normal engine setup or reverse engine setup? Would love to get a hold of that file . Never thought about using a V8 Van engine... I wonder what that would entail...I'm hopefully going to set my frame up to have a some what working canopy like in the movie but It's difficult to setup without compromising frame integrity and rididity...

You know, the more I think about it (which is several times a day) I don't know if I'm going to try to scale down the size. Trying to actually make this street legal might just steal all the joy for me. The lights wouldn't be that bad, but front and rear fenders, and bumpers? I just don't think I would actually want to drive it around on Friday night after adding all the extra stuff. It wouldn't look enough like "The Tumbler" to me anymore. Plus everything is already squeezed in pretty tight already. Making it smaller will just make the build more difficult. This will mostly be a show car, I'm not planning on doing any real driving in it. Why make it smaller?

I wouldn't get to discouraged about the size difference, the difference is negligible(9ft 4in to 8ft 6in width thats about 5 inches on each side of the vehicle plus the widest point of the vehicle is usually around the tires / backend...)...At leaste when I built my mockup no one noticed it was 10% smaller because it's so big in the first place. Also Depending on your state requirements for a road legal vehicle vary with the different classes of vehicle. A lot of custom cars including some hot rods don't necessarily have a "front bumper" per say but are legal to drive. Also I don't know about you but I couldn't stand it not being able to just hop in the tumbler and take it for a ride down the road and have to worry about the police pulling you over. I know if I was a cop I would certainly pull someone over in a tumbler at leaste just to talk to them, however if they have to do the standard license and registration then you might run into problems...(The state patrol doesn't care if your flying a space ship they have little tolerance...) I'm hoping to have mine registered under the donor vehicles registry and get it classified as a custom vehicle. But if you want to go full size by all means. Nothing is better then a full scale replica.
