First I was wondering if anyone knows of anyone that filmed the Barret Jackson Auction of the 89 Batmobile? Doug ? Viperbat? anyone? Second Myth busters did a show a while back to see if a car could actually turn like the 89 did when the grappling gun shot a hook out and anchored to a solid object. I have only heard about this episode I have never seen it . Does anyone know if it happened or not or is there any video on it?

I watched the mythbuster show and the grappling hook does not work. They did get a system to work but could not find any cable that would take the strain without breaking.

The steel cable breaks because of the shock (impulse). If you could "stretch" out the time it would survive.
Basically you need a shock absorber mechanism. It would have to be strong enough to "accelerate" the entire car during that time. I'd guess it would need to be at least equivalent to the 4 suspension shocks supporting the car. Not sure what distance the mechanism would have to travel; that depends on the initial cornering rate (acceleration) etc.
edit:
What you really need is a cable brake that will spool out more cable before the tension reaches the breaking point. The brake needs be rated at aprox. 1-2 times the weight of the vehicle (assuming you want the cable to help accelerate you at 1-2 G's).

Been searching and cant find the video. If I remmember right, it was movie myths they were testing. They ended up using a ridiculously thick cable which still snapped. The grappling hook worked in the end but the stunt was busted.

The myth buster's episode you are asking about is "episode 86: superhero hour" from the 2007 season. In this episode they also test out the batman grappling hook. Its one of my favorite episodes. I am not sure where to find a copy of the episode, its not posted on any of my usual haunts. If I find it I will let you know.

I like the part where Adam built the wrist mounted cable device that actually lifts him to the ceiling...
