I got 4 of these 23 inch riding lawn mower tires for the back and two 18 inch for the front.

sculpting the cowl

made a maniquin of my 3 year old for the costume which I will make later. I plan to sculpt the pieces individually and then cast them in plastic.

Here are the pics of my initial attempts on making the 1/2 tumbler from a paper folding kit

But the paper folding template I am using is not very accurate.

I am trying to make a TDK costume and 1/2 tumbler for my son (in time for Halloween). I am using a paper template, but it is not very accurate.

I just found this forum and I am very excited what others are doing. I was hoping to get some help from people who have done it to give me advice and help. I started out using cardboard and later add fiber glass & bondo. But seeing what Shaggy had done with wood and his template got me to think I should start over and do it better.

Shaggy's your best help. Just keep PM'ing him and bug him till he responds with tons of material

I did got a reply from Shaggy. He's great and very generous. He sent me the 1/2 template. I also got the paper template from lbc1955.  I am debating which version to go with, since the dimensions / proportions are slightly different.  I posted this picture on another post for comparison. I will added again here. Shaggy's in blue and lbc1955 is in grey.

Honestly, I originally was only going to build the tumbler for my 3 year old from Power Wheels parts. It was projected to be only 3.5 x 6 feet, with 15 in Power Wheels tires (which is the biggest size they come - from the Hurricane). Then I decided that I want my son to be able to sit completely inside the cockpit without his head sticking out at the top. Then I decided to go with 23 in riding lawn mower tires, which I bought used from a shop that do lawn mower repair. Which means that the 1/2 tumbler will be at 8.2 x 5 feet.  This is actually bigger than a real car. I am worried that my 3 years old may not be able to ride it safely.  Originally, I was going to use an electric motor, but that was for the Power Wheels version. However, at this size and with the lawn mower tires, I may have to go with a gas motor. The lawn mower repair guy said that he will help me get all the parts and help me with the metal frame. His name is Elvis.

I have no welding experience. I was going to use PVC pipes to make the frame. Big pipe, then insert a smaller pipe, then in the middle is the metal pipe. I thought it would be strong enough and still keep it light. But Elvis told me to go with metal, angle iron or square tubing.

What is the best way to do this?  I want to keep the cost to a minimum, make it light (but safe) and it has to be easy enough for a 3 years old to ride. He barely able to ride his Power Wheels Firerock. So riding a 8.2 x 5 tumbler with a gas power motor has me a little concern. However, I am filled with excitement and anticipation.

I was looking at all these pictures posted like "wait..what the hell?! I don't remember building that!!! This is my build log right???"

If you want parts that will connect properly, I would suggest sticking with the "grey" templates and not mine. One big issue with the Mark 1 templates I sent you is that they "float" there aren't really any areas where the parts actually mate up to the cabin, a mistake I am working feverishly on the Mark 2 to correct.

The "grey" templates will have a lot more detail though, so your workload might be doubled, if not tripled.

Thank you Shaggy.

I will use the grey version then.  I think I will build the big areas with hardboard and the more detailed areas with cardboard. Then I will fiber glass the whole shell, outside and inside. After that, if the shell is NOT strong enough, then I will re-enforce it inside with PVC pipes.

Hi Jennifer,

I'd like to see you start your own build log too. Perhaps two build logs, one for the tumbler and one for the suit.

Cheers

Just a suggestion Jennifer, go with wood.

It is easier and faster to work with than metal. You could try a wooden frame with thin ply for the skin. Glass the whole lot inside and out and it should still be fairly light and you would not need a big powerful engine. Then the engine support and the chassis can be strengthened with metal tube to provide stability. As you say, a three year old with a Tumbler ..... try to get him to stay away from driving over your neighbors car

Guys, just wanted to post, and show that I'm NOT dead, although I'm sure a bunch of you are sure by now that I am.

I've been racked up to the gills with many projects. Thought I would post a few pictures just to show things still move along....even if at the speed of molasses in January...in the land of Shaggy.

I give you the 1/6th scale Paper Tumbler. Going to be complete with chassis and interior per the movie.

The front tire in this shot was a test, it was tossed and a better one will be replacing it.

Individual treads will be manufactured for ALL.....4...tires.....man when you say it, it sounds hopeless. Thats probably a good 1,000 treads created just for 4 tires. gah!!

And if anyone recognizes this:

...I'm building my own, because the word on the internet streets is that you cant get the kit anymore from the original casting.

There is another build going on, but I CANNOT post pictures my wife is now a member of this site, and I dont want her accidentally run across the build photos. But those who have known me from the beginning, it has to do with the VERY FIRST post that I ever posted on this site, and yes...its still 1/6th scale.
