I did some color sanding on the quarter panel yesterday, the body is now a lot more smooth, with much less orange peel than before, but it seems to be highlighting some areas where the silver "settled" darker than in other area's. I think i'm gonna lay down a few more coats and see if that helps the paint any.

Also after consulting a co-worker here at budweiser who runs our paint booth, he said that it would have been better if i added hardener to the paint, well since i'm not a painter, i didnt know. He said it would run a chance of rolling up on me while wet sanding, well luckily it didnt do that. Now for possible problem two, it may or may not react well with the clear coat once its applied.

He offered to spray the car with some regular clear once i get it painted, for $60, or i can do it myself, and use a metallic flake clear for $10 less, but roll it on, not clear.

Options, options, what to do.

Hey Shaggy $60 bucks sounds like a bargin plus you can have him check out the prep before he paints the clear coat. Does he have access to a paint booth?....BWD

yeah, he does.  and get this, i went and asked him today just out of curiousity how much it would cost to get enough base and clear to paint the entire car, and simply use his booth.

$213.80  Shipped to my job, total package.

I asked for the color that is on the new Camaro's btw.

i figured its as close to the silver i had on the car when i got it as i'm gonna get, since i dont know the paint code that was used.   The car originally came Hugger Orange.

But my plan is to just finish building the car mechanically, in my spare time try to smooth the body out.  And when it comes close time to move, if i have the cash to buy the paint, i'll paint it, if not, i'll just re-primer and drive it until i can find a simular deal.

Oh, and here is a picture of how the car looked after i tried wet sanding.  The results were less than satisfactory.

So for now i'm gonna hold off painting the car and focus myself on more important things.  Such as brakes, fuel system, exhaust, heating, cooling, things that are important and need finishing.

in that last picture you can see my wife sitting in the driver seat reading, thats usually what she does while i build the car. that way we can talk and still spend time together, and i can get things done that need to get done.

If your bored, i did a little walk around the car just showing how its looking at the moment, still lots to clean up, and put together, but eh... all in due time.

So i decided to go with the sending unit instead of the gauge cluster for my car, its purchased and on its way, hopefully will be here by next weekend. i bought it and about 10 foot of 5/16's fuel line, and 6 foot of 3/8's fuel line. why so much rubber line?

Well the early 70's camaro's did not come with a return line. Even tho the gov was starting in on their stricter regulations, such as bumper safety, etc, fuel economy was still not much of one. So i get to route a line from scratch back to the fuel tank since i need one for the EFI.

If it stops raining i'm gonna try and install that this weekend.

Hey Shaggy, so I'm getting the sense that it rains a lot in Alabama....hehehe

Today was about the first time it rained. Actually it was more of a sprinkle since the sun was still out and it was 70 degrees....

Hey so what was the return line on the gas tank for and do you stil need it with EFI?..BWD

Hey Dave, would you believe that last Saturday is the last we saw of all that rain? I actually dressed up all nice expecting to go to town to a "carnival" (if you can call it that) in town, ended up being a volunteer for a boylan drink stand, which was cool because we ended up not giving out many drinks, even tho they were free, just because of the rain.

So i got to take home a good 3 cases of drinks on the house, just for helping. The good thing is, even tho they are old fashioned soda's, they have no artificial sweeteners, no artificial colors, and best of all, no caffeine! Makes me feel good.

Sunday i ended up spending the light of the day helping an acquaintance finish putting his Nissan 4x4 back together, poor guy doesnt know a thing about mechanics.

Dave, as far as the fuel system, here is a picture of my gas tank.
Batmobile

As you can see, the old sending unit that i have in the tank has but one outlet, a feed outlet if you will.

letters A, B, and D all went to the evap, and coal canister, which i removed since the car is now smog exempt. (even in Washington)

So i'm gonna run A & B back to the evap tank (which by the way is located right between the back seat and trunk, weird) and i'm hooking up letter D as a return, since my surge tank is now located on the driver side.

Batmobile

So my fuel system goes from the tank, up the passenger side of the car, up to the manual fuel pump on the side of the engine that pumps it up 8-14 pounds, then runs around the front side of the radiator, to the surge tank, where it fills it full, the fuel pump inside the surge tank then pumps it up to 20-26 pounds of pressure, which goes to the Throttle Body and injects the engine, what fuel is not used by the Throttle body is returned to the surge tank, so thats two sources keeping it full. When the surge tank fills to the brim it spills over into the return line i routed down the driver side of the car, back into the gas tank at the back of the car, which ultimately gets recirculated.

LUCKILY, in 5-10 years when i actually do the car up right, i plan on changing over to a 3rd generation multiport injected engine, like the one i've seen you take pictures of, i think you said it was out of a Camaro, not sure.

And, i found that NPD makes gas tanks that are ready for fuel injection, with a return line, so that will that clean up a lot of clutter i've created! I'll just have to see about getting up the cash in 5-10 years

Hey Shaggy thanks for the info and you will be in a much better financial condition once you get out of Alabama....hehehe

Yeah it may have been a mistake in throwing my Camaro gas tank into the garbage since it had the fuel pump in the tank. But its not good to have an old gas tank sitting around the garage. Maybe another aluminum gas tank like the one for the Rumbler will work for the 89 with an external fuel pump that is appropriate for the LS1.

Hey on a side note I have been working on those bat pod foot plates. The patterns you got for me helped a lot. My comitment to myself was to only work on Rumbler related stuff but after having no luck getting someone to build them for me it was time to take the jigsaw into my own hands. My plan was to do a step by step procedure like you did?

Are the fuel lines going from your gas tank to the engine being ran in steel tubing? Did you say rubber tubing or is that just for the final connection?. Steel tubing seems better but you have to do that double flange lip thing for the end connectors....BWD
