Grinding the joints down to where the inside of the pipe is touching and the outside edge of the pipe is grinded away gives you a V-joint that you can fill with your weld. But more importantly the weld penetrates all the way to the inside of the pipe. Rather than butt jointing the pipe where the outside is welded but the inside of the pipe is not fused together. When this is done right you can grind it down so that the pipe looks continuous like this joint....I know that's what I thought...BWD

Hey Conrad & Jack I feel like that old fart that says "sonny in my day we built these jigs and they had to be square, they had to be strong and we welded the frame right to the jig...."  but in reality if you don't do this the right way you might as well just sit around watching American Hot Rod....Talk about $130 for a tube of DOM just wait until you buy a length of 8" I beam and don't tell me your friend has a piece that's been in his backyard since 1976. We are talking new straight steel. OK that's enough said I got to go take my medication and eat a bowl of oatmeal before bedtime its almost 9:00. hahahaha your pal BWD

Guys, forgive my rookie-ness, but I'm having difficulty envisioning what the pipe looked like just before the weldning and grinding. the "V-Joint" specifically. can someone draw this for me? that tube definitely looks like one tube. fooled me.

I only chose the DOM tubing cause I wanted to know the feel of what I'll actually be working with, and you're right...it's pricey! And yes, the jig has been on my mind throughout. I'm pretty sure what I'll need. Your wisdom and experience is always very much appreciated.

Yes Jack, welding 101...i'll be in a MIG class in February.

Hey Guys...

I've been so busy at work and with home stuff. But of course I always have my build on my mind. I've made some minor changes again to my frame/chassis. Of course we get great Ideas from here but sometimes we have to put the brakes on and not completely change an idea because someone else's is better. for example BWD has a very very VERY well engineered vehicle - but it's a 4 seater. for us 2 seater guys his design is a bit huge. Needless to say there are many BWD design Ideas that will be used, but overall it has to be my own creation. Imitation is a high form of flattery, but do not sacrifice originality and self-creativity.

A very merry Christmas to all my co-builders, co-thinkers, co-batheads. Happy new year too!

New years resolutions:

1. stay more consistent on workouts.

2. rolling chassis by august (my original goal was February - HA!! yeah right!)

3. Make home improvements to my house during the "down time" in the market. in order to prep it for sale in 09. then hopefully move to NC and get some upstate NY Property. Long Island is just too damn expensive. ALMOST 6 grand in taxes for 70x90 lot...terrible.

4. get "in" with a experienced mechanic who's on the same batpage as me.

5. Marvel at Daves completed Rumbler.

Be safe guys!!!! See you next year!!!!!!!!

Hey Conrad, thanks for the new year wish, same to you bud!  I hope everything is going good your way, and im really REALLY glad to see that your build is still on your mind.  I hope to see more progress pictures real soon.  I know im not within distance of you, but if i can offer what mechanic skills i have, i will be more than glad to assist you with ANY knowledge i have that helps get your build on the road.

Very much obliged partner....now stand still while I attempt to teleport you, your tools, and a small block 350 to my garage.

OK so YES!!! I've spent over 300 bucks for the beginnings of by bottom chassis. 6 24 foot steel square tube lengths i had the steel shop cut in half so it can fit in my Jeep. I'm proud to say i have a pretty good square done. haha. the insides will be started this coming weekend....and since the world hates Mac users i can't post a pic right now but here's a link to what i have begun in steel. Remember, I'm following the lead of a combination of BWD, WB and those AWESOME AUSSIES!!
