In 73' the compression on the 460 was at 8.5-1 but the 71' and older 460s were at 10.5-1, that will make a difference. Even at 202hp they had around 350lbs/ft of torque. It would be neat to see how the ford and caddy react to better breathing. As you said that helps.
For example I have a stock 66 Galaxie with a 390 and my dad has a 66 F-100 with a 390 with improved breathing and that truck would kill my car any day. The difference is amazing.

Hey Chilibean I thought the 460s came on the scene in 1973 it replaced the 429.  Yeah the coolest thing about these big blocks especially the Cadillac is their ability to take numerous shots of nitrious without damaging the engine. Uh oh did I let out a secret about my Tumbler"s secret weapon? BWD

According to my parts interchange book the 460/429 debuted in 68' the only real significant difference between the two is the stroke, and most parts are interchangeable between the two.

So the chevy V8 305, 350 sounds good to me. as i said plenty of those for sale in donors on the local craigslist (one of them only had 70K miles! oh how I wish i could get that now!) . I must confess, big blocks scare me. there's a shop next to my office with a nova one of the mechanics is restoring. he started the engine yesterday and i gotta tell you..it sounded like an earthquake. just awesome. I actually "felt" the engine rumble while still sitting at my desk. I had to go over to look. the carb looked bigger than my head. I think it's a 454. I'm gonna see if he lets me take pictures so you guys can comment. Just the sound of it was inspiring. Note to self: Don't get ahead of your goal that's right in front of you...START THE CHASSIS! But I guess I have to really keep thinking about the motor of choice. how decisions change as time goes on:

first was going to make a "baby tumbler"...now it's pretty much close to full size.
first wanted to use a big ATV motor, then a six....now a definite V8.

I said it before, I'll say it again...I love this site.

I really want you guys to see that nova motor.

i think you should go with a 350 , give it just that more push on the end (couse you probably wont get any better than 17 miles to the gallon ) but hey, who cares about gas mileage when your having fun!   305's are GREAT dont get me wrong, i have a 305 in 3 of the 5 trucks i own, but that just dong have that "torque-ish" feel to me.   Oh and i was thinking about it, depending on how rough the terrain is your planning on taking this monster accross, you might wanna concider a holley OFF ROAD carb, they are pretty cool from what i hear (im a 4 barrel carb quadrajet person myself, old school) but it would keep fuel to your engine in those near tip over instances with less of a chance of spilling your bowls.  (that is if your planning on getting that rough with this awesome machine).  And speaking of your chassis, YES please focus on whats on your plate now to finish, BUT also im thinking it would be good to get that "important part" such as the engine and tranny JUST so you can use it to better make measurements, that way you only have to measure twice, cut once, you know?  One thing i cant stand, is having to re-do what i have already done.  And you seem to have the same feelings about this.

Thanks monstertrucker....this will primarily be a street vehicle but would like to handle off-road too. Obviously not a rubicon trail (we'll leave that to the Jeep!) but modest dirt roads with no huge hills and such. I'm leaning towards a 350.

Conrad here with some thoughts on my build. It's funny when things in life seem to be getting to you, you start to lose your desire for what you love and what you've been wanting to achieve. i actually thought to myself the other day..."am I really going to do this?"...I immediately noticed I was second guessing or having doubts about going through with this whole project because of all the personal domestic drama happening in my life right now. I then looked at my model and my drawings and I watched the chase scene from the movie. Looked at my hot wheels replica and thought,,,"yes I am". It was that simple. I must separate the things that mean the most to me from the things that bring me down. This site was and still remains to be a catalyst for achieving my goal. Seeing and reading about others progress and the ability to have my own platform and forum thread to share ideas and stories is a great thing to have and I thank the people who work to keep it going.

thanks a million. I'm still motivated.

I should be ordering my manual bender by the end of the coming week. I've been doing practice welds for months with a stick welder. Butt welds and T welds are pretty easy when welding square tubing and plates. Then yesterday I tried doing round tubing with the stick....what a mess. Very difficult to keep the stick steady as i go around the tube and holding the stick at all angles doesn't seem to help. I think I see why MIG and TIG are used almost exclusively for tubing...or maybe it speaks to my skill with a stick when it comes to round tubing. don't know. I'm just looking forward to getting my MIG welder.
