I love this car so much. I have debated trying to build my own. I have a few questions. When the patent ends, will I be able to go to TRIX or anyone else and have a kit made? If not will I be able to build my own without having the WB breathing down my neck? I know a little on what it takes to put one of these things together, but if someone could post any links of tutorials or any one that has made one and documented it, that would be great. Any links would be appreciated.

Thanks

i doubt u will be able to go to trix for they have a contract, now soon as the patent ends im sure a lot of kits will start popping up. weather u buy a kit or build ur own, WB will still keep an eye out on you, its still part of there franchies and if u do something with it that they feel hurts the franchise they can come after you. so far the only 2 sites i know of that has people documenting there work on the build is mine ( www.unlimiteddimension.net ) just go to the project bat area, the other is http://www.k-tune.com/k-chin/right.html hes building a shell to fit over an existing car without modfication to its chassis unlike mine.
i doubt you will find any real tutorial on building a batmobile, but a little tip if u wnat to go a cheap route, go like the 2 link i showed u and build a shell around a car, if not, excpet to spend a lot more, i estmated mine costing 35,000.00 to 40,000.00 to build mine, which has more features then a nomral prop car would but i also have family that can help with welding and engine work so i wont have to pay someone to do that work.

I would aslso like to build an '89 replica someday, but I'm not too sure you won't have any trouble from WB even after the patent supposedly expires if you publicly display the car. If you go on the 1966 Batmobile website, you'll read that even George Barris has to get WB's permission when displaying the Batmobile; even though George owns the car, he doesn't own the rights to it, and it's been over 30 years since the car was first built. I suggest that you ask a person that fequents that site who goes by the name "Gdog", he seems to be the most knowledgable on that subject.

theres alwasy a chacne u are gonna catch heat form wb, if im right the main reason barris has to get permission is he uses the name "batman" and the 66 logo, i think sony may have purches some of the 66 items. but if wb watned they could go after people for dressing up as batman. but i know a lot of people who owns 66 replicas, that puts them on public disply, russ martin uses his in his parades he does. but one things for sure, if ur worryed about the heat, a 89 batmobile is not for you. cuz no matter how much time goes pass, theres always gonna be heat on any person who uses the car.

The reason Barris has to get permission to display the car is because a) he was displaying the #1 car for money, which was co-owned by Barris. There were alot of contract stipulations that prevented Barris from doing very much, and he got a lot of heat from WB. Eventually, he stopped touring the original #1, and has toured multiple replicas since, CLAIMING they are the #1. The tell tale giveaway is that only the #1 and #5 cars were steel, the rest were fiberglass. These alleged "#1" cars are all fiberglass that he shows! and b) Like sg1star said, he uses the door bats and the term "Batmobile", that is currently and will always be copyrighted. For awhile, Barris had modified the door bats to look completely different (and much cheesier) than the original copyrighted versions.

WB will still turn up the heat on those who build replica cars, but will have little recourse unless the owners slip up and do something stupid (like endorsing products or events as a "Batmobile"). Remember, when the #5 car was created by a fan and TOURED AT THE SAME TIME BARRIS WAS TOURING HIS CARS, Barris could not do anything but issue a cease and desist order. He never even came close to confiscating that car!

Most '66 owners do in fact tour their cars and alot of them make money off them. Not a LOT of money, but a couple bucks for photo opps and parades and stuff like that. In fact, I spent all of yesterday with Nate Truman, who owns a very nice '66 replica. (For pictures and the full scoop, follow this link: http://www.thebatcave.8k.com/nate_truman.htm )

Follow that link and you will see Nate's car, as well as lots of pics of me in it. Tons of fun.

I know several guys that are currently preparing for the upcoming patent lapse, and will be offering kits for similar prices to the '66. The only reason they are not on my site yet is because right now, it IS still illegal to sell them. But not after November (remember, lots of people are OPENLY selling '66 Anti-Crime Roadsters). And no, TRIX is not one of them. They are under strict contract and the watchful eye of big brother Warner, and they will not soon go the way of Jay Ohrberg (sp?).

its just like modifyin a car- every1 takes moulds of the original front mounts or sides and the actual company that makes them cant do nothin- so long as the copier calls them copies and doesnt stamp that companys logo on it(hint veilside). in terms of makin a kit to put on your car your talkin major work...first you gotta find a car long enough, which cockpit is further back, is wider..differential and axle and drive/shaft gear that can take the wider and bigger tyres, because, in honesty looking at the net over this car a guy made a kit for a chevy that is just big enough to fit it- but without it being the real dramatically cool dimensions of the 1989 batmobile it just plain sucked...i reckon if u create it yourself sweet.

nick,
the trick to buidling a 1:1 replica is not finding a car that is long enough, the trick is chooseigng a car no matter if its shorter and choping the frame and extending it, the cockpit can be moved back easly. u just rebuild it. most people build kits to fit on existing cars becasue its cheaper, me, my batmobile will be 1:1 my bro in law is doing the extending of the frame for me.

Yup. As long as you are left with a wheelbase that is about 141", you should be fine. Then re-rig the whole thing with Corvette suspension parts, and ZOOM.
