So I have my donor stripped and I read in one of the builds that someone had scrapped the existing wiring harness and found an affordable universal one....so I went ahead and assumed that I was going to do the same thing, and cut off the existing wiring harness, I still have it but its in pieces...

as I have been researching, Im getting the drift that I should not have done that lol. I need this car street legal...in CA...the tree hugging capital of the world.....and that means it has to pass smog....the universal wiring harness I was looking at apparently doesnt have all the smog-sensor wiring BS...

My initial idea was that I was going to just register it as a 95 caprice, but that seems like a bad idea as there is no way on Gods green earth that every single cop I come across isnt going to run the plates to see how its registered.....and when they see its registered as a 95 caprice, and not a batmobile..that can be an issue...looking into that, it appears there are a few hoops to jump through...but the main one is the smog

I need some guidance here guys...my vision is to have this properly registered and street legal in CA....my mechanic friend is not willing/able to make it able to be smogged for sure as we do not have the knowledge/tools to chase down any sensor issue that can throw out errors...and now it appears I have to chase down another caprice wiring harness?? He wants to just rebuild the engine, remove the smog stuff and find some under the table smogger which is not the way I want to go....

Any wisdom on the subject would be helpful, thanks!!!

so I found a new wiring harness online but its 700$....but my only real option is to either go to junk yard to find one, or buy another donor to strip the harness out...

I have been reading a bunch on registering the car and it sounds like its not impossible...however one thing that seems to be an issue is that the BAR says headlights must be at least 22" off the ground...

in any case....would love to get some feedback from those that have gone through this process so I can get some real world info....

Register it as a 95 caprice because that's what it is. Modifications , such as a body kit, don't change the title of the car .

actually from what Im reading, it does. If the car cant be identified as what it is...then it is supposed to be registered accordingly.....it looks like 500 passes are given out every year in CA due to the SB100 bill which could make it to where I can either register it as a custom car, and it gets smog exempt....or a modified caprice....Ill keep researching and cross the bridge when I get there...

Definately buy your haynes book then go to the junk yard with sharpie and masking tape. label everything and cut if needed (if needed being important). On a older vehicle smog/emissions wiring is very minimal compared to newer cars. Your other option is to build a wiring harness which sounds more difficult than it is. Its mainly time consuming. The biggest problem is that you will lose all of the connector end fittings if you cut anything.

If you're really concerned I would at least try to piece back what you have. It will give you a better understanding when trying to put the wiring back in any way. While your haynes book is in black and white, the colors of wires will be noted and labeled. It will take time but you can put it back together. Bring coffee. I can facetime you one of these nights to see what you got.

Have you done any more research on how you're going to register it? I'm just down the road from you in Sacramento and that is one of my biggest concerns with building a batmobile.
