The greatest problem to overcome when building Bat Vehicles and the
major cause of project abandonment is the critical response to the
periodic episodes of BAT VEHICLE BUILDER’s BLOCK. This is why less
than one quarter of one percent; one in 400, of Bat Vehicle project
starts will ever be completed.

BAT VEHICLE BUILDER’s BLOCK

I define this as: The condition of being unable to think of what to do
next or how to proceed further with planning. The Bat Vehicle Builder
has lost the ability to produce physical work towards completion and
creative thinking on the project has become cloudy and elusive. Even
worse, the episode of Bat Vehicle Builder’s Block will cause an
ever-increasing anxiety, resulting in an avoidance response and
further procrastination. For these reasons, each episode of Bat
Vehicle Builder’s Block is a defining moment. It is how you overcome
an episode of Bat Vehicle Builder’s Block that will define your
courage in the face of adversity and propel your Bat Vehicle further
towards completion.

Has anyone out there experienced BUILDER’s BLOCK? Do you have some
words of advice and encouragement for present and future Bat Vehicle
builder’s. vertigo

BAT VEHICLE BUILDER’s BLOCK
Part 2  Understanding the reasons
The reason BUILDER’s BLOCK sounds so dreadful and overwhelming is
because nobody ever takes it apart. Builders combine all the different
types of creative building problems into one broad and vague category.
In fact, there's no such thing as "BUILDER’s BLOCK," and treating a
broad range of creative building slowdowns as a single vague problem
just creates something slippery and monolithic. Each type of creative
building slowdown has a different cause that requires a different
solution.
Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the petrifying mystique of the
all-inclusive, “BUILDER’s BLOCK”, it's better to take it apart, define
it, and then master it. There are many reasons for creative building
slowdowns and I plan to post some of the more common types with
solutions in future posts.  Experience is usually the best teacher.
Anyone out there have a past adventure with BUILDER’s BLOCK?   vertigo

BAT VEHICLE BUILDER’s BLOCK
Part 3 You Are Frozen and Unable to Physically Build, Plan, or Think
Realistically about Building.
This is the most common BUILDER’s BLOCK
Stray thoughts about building and or planning to build stop before any
action. The gravity of your whole build may be weighing heavily upon
you. Difficulty of the build, self-doubt, and mutually exclusive
conflicts, may be producing massive anxiety and possibly a flight
reaction.
SOLUTION: Ask yourself, “Honestly, do I really still want to build a
Bat Vehicle and why?”  If you answer NO!!!  Quit the Bat Vehicle
Build. Family and other obligations may preclude the time and money to
complete a Bat Vehicle. Or maybe, you have become bored with building
a Bat Vehicle but still having a hard time quitting because it is hard
for you to give up on anything you started without completing it.

But if you answered “YES” then you need to work on your mental build
strategy. There will still be lots of residual built up anxiety so the
easy way to solve this one is to combine anxiety reduction with a
self-contract for building. I wrote out my self-contract for my
Tumbler build and signed it. “I AGREE WITH MYSELF TO SPEND AN AVAERAGE
OF 1-HOUR OF PER DAY IN THE PRESENCE OF MY TUMBLER EVEN IF I
PHYSICALLY DO NOTHING ON THE BUILD. Rarely, some days I don’t do
anything on my Tumbler build but sit in a chair and think. The
difficulties associated with building a Tumbler or other Bat Vehicle
can generate a lot of anxiety but by maintaining exposure to the
visual source of anxiety (your Bat Vehicle) you will habituate or
become so familiar with the reasons for your anxiety that after a
while they will no longer produce anxiety.  Rather than becoming a
stimulus for anxiety, being in the presence of my Tumbler often
produces creative problem solving and inspirational build planning. I
always have a clip board nearby to record any eureka insights should
they occur. Sometimes I stand a small sign on projects that I find
myself avoiding.  “JUST DO SOMETHING” vertigo

BAT VEHICLE BUILDER’s BLOCK
Part 4
You suddenly have a terrible feeling and an over whelming realization
that your Bat Vehicle build has taken a wrong turn, quite a ways back.
This is the worst. You made a calculated and concentrated decision
that felt bold and clever - you threw yourself into construction and
now you're realizing that you made a horrible mistake and you've gone
off course. Worse, you can see where your build should be right about
now, if you hadn't made that dreadful error.
If you're absolutely sure that you've gone the wrong way, then there's
no point in going forward any further. Is there any alternative to
rewinding all the way to the original mistake and starting from there?
Yes, but it will probably involve making excuses and living with
something that you will forever be dissatisfied with. That said. You
really have no alternative but to correct what is wrong. Anyone had
this happen to them?

Most Bat Vehicle builders will probably face build slowdowns and mistakes before completing their builds.

I can relate to this having made a major error on my Tumbler.

I had worked on my Tumbler front arm design until I thought it was
absolutely perfect. Yet, I felt dissatisfied with the instability of
the angled movie correct arms and decided after much mental jousting
that straight arms would be superior in both strength and vehicle
stance. So began my wrong turn. I translated my drawings into steel,
cutting and welded them to my design. Then I set up my front axles
with a jig into holes cut into my straight built Tumbler arms. Then I
picked up my welding rod holder and prepared to weld the front axles
in place. That was when I realized the gravity of my mistake in
straightening my Tumbler’s front arms. Caught up too much in the
physical engineering I had sacrificed the artistic effect produced by
the Tumbler’s angle arms. This I expressed as simply, “WHAT A BITCH”
summarizing my frustration. I am still correcting this mistake.

There is so much information on the Tumbler, DOJ batmobile, BatPod, and all the other batmobiles that organizing the information is the only way to avoid overload and confusion, so as to be able to find particular information when you need it.
Three years ago when I decided to build a Batman Tumbler I didn't know much about automotive engineering and design and almost nothing about the mechanical workings of the Tumbler. I spent a couple of years researching the Tumbler and acquiring additional skills I believed would be needed to construct the Tumbler. In addition to extensive digital files and a dozen models I also have collected a large amount of paper files on both the Tumbler and DOJ batmobile. Attached is a photo image of my organized paper files. vertigo

BAT VEHICLE BUILDER’s BLOCK
Part 5-A Negative Self Talk       “I’m just not creative!!!”

“Denying your own creativity is like denying you’re a human being.
We’re all limitlessly creative, but only to the extent that we realize
that we create our own limits with the way we think. If you tell
yourself you’re not creative, it becomes true. Stop that.
In that sense, awakening your own creativity is similar to the path
reported by those who seek spiritual enlightenment. You’re already
enlightened, just like you’re already creative, but you have to strip
away all of your delusions before you can see it. Acknowledge that
you’re inherently creative, and then start tearing down the barriers
you have created, that block your creativity.”  Brian Clark

BAT VEHICLE BUILDER’s BLOCK
Part 5-B Negative Self Talk       “I’m just not creative!!!”
The secrets behind what we call creative art.

When we think of a creative artist we often imagine the artist
painting his masterpiece with nothing more than some brushes and a
palette of paints. Only one person in a million can paint high quality
works of art like this, if that many. These individuals are described
to possess near perfect internal-external spatial awareness with the
ability to execute translation into reality in a physical medium.
Even, most of the great masters used multiple drawings to shape their
works before actually painting their masterpieces.

Most artwork today starts with desire and many artists use tools and
photographs to get their perspectives correct. Many project their
photographs onto the canvas and trace lines, following the projected
image details. Others use vector programs like Adobe Illustrator.
Photoshop is often used to analyze color from photographs to mix
paints to get the right color balance. Sculptural artists frequently
use 3D computer programs for scanning and CNC multi-axis routers/mills
to create masters and the film industry has produced movie sets from
foam so massive that some have covered the area of a small city block.

Bat Vehicles are truly works of sculptural art that fall under the
category of realism. We often admire replica Bat Vehicles for their
closeness to the original. To be a successful Bat Vehicle builder
requires a burning desire to build a Bat Vehicle, the will to do the
prerequisite research, commitment to put in the time to acquire the
necessary skills, and the patience to solve a multitude of small
problems.

The ratio of creative thought to physical reality remains about the
same as the adage.
1% creative inspiration : 99% perspiration (study and physical work)   vertigo

Considerations for 3D modeling a full-sized DOJ Batman with 3D printing or CNC foam routing.

hey sly,
I would ask them if their files can be used with a CNC router table with X Y Z and a fourth rotational axis. Also if their files can be used in a sectional mode. The are services available that can route full size cars from large blocks of foam. Last time I saw this service it was running between 10,000 and 20,000. You could buy your own 4' x 8' CNC router table for a little more. Most of these full car files I've seen are just able to do an external model. I had thought doing this but have decided to spend the money on the build. vertigo

I posted this here because it is relevant to those considering CNC milled foam and/or plastic printing methods.
I requested an estimate for a life sized car routed/milled in foam.

“I have a life size concept car file for 7.5' wide X 22' long X 4.5'
tall. My files are STL. I would like to have this routed/milled out in
foam. I am not asking for an exact estimate but rather a price range
for this type of work. I understand that there are many factors to
consider for a true estimate. A price range would tell me if I can
afford to have this work done and not waste your time on a detailed
estimate.”

Here is the reply I received:
“It really depends on the foam. High density urethane foam can cost
$50-70 per cubic ft. A car of this size with 10lb foam $10-22k. I like
to use 1lb EPS and coat it. Using EPS we can profile cut it with our
hot wire saving machine and assembly time. Generally a basic 5 sided
car cut in 1lb EPS $7-10k plus cost of foam.
Hope this helps.
Note 1-pound EPS sell for 4-5.00 per cubic foot
