One more thing I learned about cutting metal with metal cutting cirular saws.
Use a full-size portable metal cutting circular for straight cut lines 2-3" or longer.
Though you could use the full-sized saw on all cuts it becomes hard to cut the 2-3" because of visibility.
So, I use a small 20V Dewalt metal cutting circular saw to cut the 2-3" cuts. vertigo

Sly "What's the noise like on these saws? I guess they're pretty loud."

Metal working Cutting/Welding Processes

Typical noise levels: Some of these may surprise you.

Metal Cutting Circular Saw: up to 120 dB(A) (about the same as cutting plywood with wood cutting circular saw but not quite as loud as a chain saw.)

Grinding: 95 – 105 dB(A)

Flame cutting-oxy/acetylene: up to 100 dB(A) (typically about 90dB(A)

Plasma cutting (hand-held up to 100A, cutting up to 25mm thickness only): 98 – 105 dB(A)

MIG : 95 – 102 dB(A)

ARC (stick welder) :85 - 95 dB(A)

TIG: up to 75 dB(A)

Air arc gouging: 100 – 115 dB(A)

“De-slagging”/chipping: 105 dB(A)

Cutting out the nose cone weapons pod top plate.
Here is an example of making straight edge guide hand held plasma cuts with stops.
One problem when making hand held plasma cuts with a straight edge guide
is cutting past where you wanted to stop.
Stops are used to make precise stops of the hand held plasma torch.
Most hand held plasma torches have a drag shield with a stand off edge of 3/16 inch. and s stand off height of 3/16".
So, straight edge hand held plasma torch guides are usually cut from 3/16" thick X 3/4" for cutting 4-feet or less.
On cuts longer than 4-feet the straight edge guides are cut from 3/16" thick X 2-3" flats.
Hand held portable metal cutting circular saws have replaced hand-held plasma torches for cutting straight lines on 1/16-1/4" plate steel. You can also cut 3/8" thick steel but blade cutting linear feet decrease significantly. Cuts made with metal cutting circular saws are clean and sharp needing only a light pass with a grinder or file to break the sharp edge.

Cut out the nose cone cannon sleeve slits for both side panels of the nose cone weapons pad.
Here are some images of a trick I used to cut these elliptical slits.
Since the cannon sleeves are going to be heavily welded to support the slip in cannon barrels I don't need to
have really clean cuts.
Many hand held plasma torch users are unaware that steel can be plasma cut with a wooden template guide.
I plasma cut these elliptical slits in around 3-minutes each.
So, why would I make a template from wood. Short run quick cutting a couple of parts for welding.
Cutting templates from wood is easier and quicker than cutting them from any other material.
Wood templates are good for 2-6 cuts. vertigo

Hey Vertigo-

Thank you for the warm welcome and the tips-

I've always wanted a set of those Eastwood Durablock sanding blocks, but have never bit the bullet. Do you recommend them??

Thanks again-

hey WAERZENGINEER,
It would depend on how much you would use them.
It's nice to have them all in one tool box.
Have not needed any other since I bought mine. vertigo

Good Info- Thank you!

While in university, I made the mistake of buying cheap "Gator" wetsand paper to polish an engine I was building... (package looked similar to 3M paper)

The first pass of the paper and all the "grit" on the paper was wiped away; only the paper backing was left!

Sandpaper is worth paying for!

WAERZENGINEER
" I've read some of your posts about your CNC Plasma cutter but never saw any specifics."

hey WAERZENGINEER,
You will find quite a few detailed posts on this thread about plasma torch cutting, CNC plasma tables, and pattern making.
My CNC plasma table is a TORCHMATE 4 x 4.
I have not used it on my TUMBLER build, preferring to use old school methods of cutting my parts, so that others who can't afford to spend 25,000.oo on a CNC plasma table, can use my methods to build their own Bat Vehicles with relatively inexpensive tools.
You could also buy the software to create cutting files and take them to a metal shop that has a CNC to have them cut.
OR
You can also find a lot of information on building one's own CNC Router/Plasma table on SLYs B v S DOJ build log. vertigo

What other specifics are you looking for.
