An old 1989 Ertle Batmobile showed up in my toy collection last month - a remnant of a garage sale or thrift store find a few years back. This toy was so well loved and played with, it's now practically destroyed! I decided to make it shine again and whipped out my airbrush. The car measures about 5.5 inches long and has a small plastic Batman figure in the cockpit.
First step was to open it up and separate the die cast body from the plastic and spray on some paint stripper...
Next I washed off all the stripper and the paint...
Then I primed...
Unfortunately my airbrush wasn't working up to snuff, and my initial paint job was garbage!
So I stripped off all the paint and primer and started over. 24 hours later it looks like this...
I also painted the rims a darker chrome...
I applied the lacquer this morning around 7am while it wasn't too hot outside (Texas summer and all). The stuff came out as this milky substance which had me silently freaking out, but I went ahead with it anyways and hoped for the best.
The finished product. I hot glue gunned the windshield back in, reset the tires and axles and screwed the chasis back in place.
The comparison shot. The 1:18 Hot Wheels Batmobile used a semi-gloss for their lacquer. The larger model also has a clear windshield where the smaller has a yellow (?) one. I attempted to clean off the yellow with a variety of solvents (thinking some kid yellowed it up with a highlighter), but nothing worked. I'm now thinking of using some translucent black to shadow out the windshield.
About a year ago my wife bought me the Batwing you see in the background here. Now that The Batmobile is back in action, wouldn't be cool to create some kind of display stand to showcase both vehicles in action? Hmmm.. *grabs a sketch pad*
It is my hope that students will not take their obedient place in society by becoming successful cogs in the wheel.

I am building a 1/25 AMT/ ETRL batmobile, i hope to post some pictures of it soon. I based it off the hero car. I am giving it some extra detail like new pedals as seen in the film and wheels that are shineey witha gold hue and an accurate afterburner, interior and general exterior. You ought to try a model kit now. I have found it enjoyable
