Hey fellow batman lovers and builders
I have been reading various threads over the last 1.5 years on tumbler builds and this is my take on a tumbler that can fit on a standard trailer which is 8' x 5' which I hope to be transporting this on for off road fun in a farm out of town
I decided to go for an electric motor rather than a petrol motor for something different and it is so easy to just charge and go rather than worrying about mixing oil and petrol together or how noisy the motors are when they are small etc. Easy to drive down to the local park without many people seeing (quiet street we have !)
I decided to go for a bolt together frame so if I wanted to change any design later on it would be easy to. Also less mucking around checking everything is square.
For the scale of this I guess it is under 1/2 scale?
So far I have purchased off the shelf wheels and parts to make it easy to build. Will go for larger tyres eventually.
Current build gear:
Frame is built from 40x40x2.5 SHS NZ steel, laser cut pieces and bolted together entire frame.
Plywood body panels and floor
72V lithium ion battery - currently 26AH
72V brushless motor with complete differential - 1500W (will upgrade to 3000W eventually)
3000W brushless controller with foot pedal throttle
Hydraulic rear disc brakes, front drum brakes yet to be installed and handbrake
Electronic dash with voltage, current draw, speed etc

Definitely pretty fun! only taken it down to the park and footpath so far, I will have to do a speed test and see what it gets up to. Will look bit better once I finish the body panels and get them on

Hi spidey4fun, the dream is a full size electric tumbler , will commission someone to make the frame for that when the time comes !
I like your batpod build, really nicely done!! I'm a big fan.
How many watts and voltage are you running on your hub motor?

10kw hub motor. 24s2p pack. Charges at about 86v but settles to 80v. 3C rated batteries so limited to about 60amps max. I'm using a 96v Kelly controller. When I get around to doing some more on the second bike it'll have the same size motor but a 24s3p pack. Also using batteries that have a 10c rating, so I should be able to pull 200amps. That'll make a huge difference for accelerating.

Wow 10kw that's a pretty large motor ! Did you buy directly from golden motor? I suppose having the extra power gives you the better acceleration etc and you can always dial down the output. What does the batpod weigh ? My kart is roughly 150kg at the moment.

Motor was custom made in the US. It's too powerful for my battery pack so I set the controller to 30% power. Slow acceleration results. A quick upgrade of the battery packs would fix that though.

Ford wants to hot-wire your car.
"The automaker and Purdue University are co-developing a charging cable for use with high-power charging stations that could recharge an electric vehicle's battery in the same time it takes to fill a gas tank, which typically takes about five minutes
The cable features a unique liquid cooling system that can phase the liquid into vapor, which improves its ability to dissipate heat.
"Today, chargers are limited in how quickly they can charge an EV’s battery due to the danger of overheating. Charging faster requires more current to travel through the charging cable," Michael Degner, senior technical leader, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering, said.
"The higher the current, the greater the amount of heat that has to be removed to keep the cable operational."
The most powerful stations currently in use can charge an electric car to 80% in 20 to 40 minutes and new cable designs will be required to increase the speed as battery and charging network technology improves.
A timeline for the rollout of the new cable has not been announced, but a patent application has been filed to protect the intellectual property."

Hey all,
I have made some good progress over the last few months ! I have used some time stuck at home to get work done on the body panels and the front wheels are bigger now than my original tyres and look much better
I had a little hicup though which has set me back on the engine side of things and that I blew the diff as it was too small for the 22" diameter wheels I put on the back, eeek!
I'm working on the new subframe to hold a Toyota Rav4 rear open differential and I am building custom solid axles to mount to the diff so it should be practically bullet proof and will handle any electric motor I will mount to it
Currently I have a QS motor 3kw PMSM waiting to go in. It should be able to get the kart up to 50-60kph which I will be very happy with hehe!
