With the help of some aviation peeps, I got my hands on this Technical Manual for the Plessey RAT which was originally designed as a emergency generator for the Avro Vulcan and later repurposed to the nose of the 89 Batmobile.

Very interesting. I wonder why they didn't include the support on the front part on the '89

Slysnake,

They used a starter cover off a RR Viper engine in place of the Vulcan RAT alternator cover, as the slight “droop” in the Viper starter cover gave it a more sinister look than the plain old round Vulcan cover.

This is a pic of the original RAT alternator cover.

Minijokerguy,

They mixed and matched parts they found in scrap yards to achieve the look they wanted. The RAT has a large round cover over the alternator with a screened cooling vent in the front center. Pic attatched of a deployed RAT. The RR Viper starter cover they ended up using has a slight “droop” in it to aid inlet airflow characteristics for the engine installation in the airframe. Pic of RR Viper attached as well. The original RAT cover probably looked to clunky when mocking up on the car, wheras the Viper cover gave it a more sinister look...

You can also look at the attached pic of a removed RAT Alternator Cover in (my) post #162589 just above to get a better idea of what it looks like.

Minijokerguy,

Same setup both movies. Vulcan RAT with a RR Viper starter cover in place of the standard Vulcan alternator cover. Just looked better overall with this mix n match combo.

Minijokerguy,

Always lots to learn, regardles of Bat knowledge or experience. As you map out your build, give it justice and do it right, even if it takes a while longer at a greater expense. It’s an Icon and deserves the best! Nothing worse than being excited to see a build at a show that up close ultimately disappoints.

Very true.

It’s hard though, as there is so much accurate and inaccurate information and pics out there.
