Then once I had the car out I needed to start sorting all my parts and get them packed away...
But now the issue was that my shed in the back was already full and no real shelves or packing space in it...

So I headed down to our local building depo and got a few lengths of wood beams and a few sheets of chip board wood to make some proper shelves in the shed so that I can pack everything away.
And once I had the frames cut I started assembling them and applying a coat of all weather black varnish just to make sure they will last for a while.

So then I cut some of the sheets of chip board for the units i need to build for the garage to pack and store all my tools and things into...

After the shelves are done I will cut wood for the top sections and then fit them into the shed...

* P.S. Dont mind all the mess in the pics, thats part of the sorting and dumping stages to clear out what I dont need...

I envy your weather. We're expecting a little snow here. Cold weather makes it hard to do fiberglass work.

hey Sly. Yeah we have pretty good weather all year round, every now and then its a bit chilly and rainy but nothing too bad.
I can only remember maybe about 4 times in the last 3 years that it was too cold to do any fiberglass work.
but other than that I lay fiber almost on a weekly basis...

Hey guys.
So I m almost done with my shelving in the shed. Been so busy getting the new baby room ready and rotating shifts at work, getting ready for shut down soon.

Ive been looking at a few other options on the rear diff and saw an Iveco Daily that is running dual 16" rear rims.
Anybody ever looked at these or think it would be an option to look at?
The vehicle itself has a kerb weight of 2 tons and can take another 1,5 tons in load. So total of 3,5 tons which will be more that enough to handle a Tumblers weight of around 2,5 tons.

And with the dual wheel setup it sits at just under 2.0m (1966 cm) wide so not too much to go to get Tumbler spec width...
Although the std 16" rims are only 6J (around 6 Inch) One could look at getting them widened (Pending on the thickness that they are now) or having a new set made up in the same PCD and similar offsets so that there wouldn't be any need for spacers and things...

Attached are a few images of ones Ive seen.
And until thus far I have not found any Dana 60 units available locally and so hence why Im looking into other options. And with the Rand / Dollar rate it would take a while before I could import a Dana 60 unit as customs and shipping are both killers...

Hey all.

Ok so with 2018 behind us, im late with my updates...
So this is just a small follow up on the previous posts I had originally and where Im at now...

- The actual build:
* Ok so l found a some Dana 40 units, and one or two other SFA units but still looking into other options, been asking around on the offroad forums but looks like only a handfull of guys know about or had Dana 60 units a few years back.

* Ive stripped everything out the donor car and have been looking / thinking about a few ideas of what I could change or do using the OEM stuff...

Preparation for the build:
* So this is a MASSIVE SHOUT OUT TO Mr SHAGGY (Jason) for the Plans and blueprints, well worth it...
- I finally got them and have been sitting for hours on end going thru them all...
- Now the next step (Once Im ready) is to get some of them printed in stages so I can have a set around with me as I work and the masters on the PC too... And not to worry I have a PC in the garage too so I will never be far from the plans...

* Still slowly continuing with my monthly pre-build purchases. Only buying one or two small items that I will need in the mid stages of the build but just a slow and steady way of securing some items to make the flow of the build as easy as possible. And then the rest of the funds are being saved up for the larger items that I will be purchasing from most expensive to cheapest. So get the biggest, expensive things out the way and move down the list...

* I also got myself a few A0 size aluminum poster frames, reason for this is that I will be doing a few prints and putting them up...
- So I will have one general blueprint / multi view of the tumbler with sizes
- The others I will be doing one of two things:
1. Either I print enlarged views of the Tumbler (Front, Back, Sides, Top) so one for each frame
2. Or I will print enlarged pieces of each section as I work for a general view, reference point.

Other:
* Still just continuing to update my spreadsheets and items as I go so nothing really new here, just added the info for 2019 to the list...

* Ive also started making a few house beds that people have asked me to build for them, and thought this would be a nice way to also make a few extra funds on the side that will go back into parts and items needed for the build...

* Then Ive also taken a big step in selling my car and bought a double cab bakkie (pickup to you guys) with a Lexus 3UZ v8 motor. Now I can cart my own stuff around and do things a little bit easier without relying on other people to loan their pickups...

* For my build space, Im 90% done with my new units and reason for the delay is that Ive decided to remove the old tops and get granite tops... I have 80% of the tops done in granite and just waiting for the last bit to be finished. And I need to add in one door at the back, and a window section on the side for ease of flow and more access, also it will add extra ventilation as I currently only have one door with no windows...
- And getting a reasonable size worktable on wheels built for all my other machines and then I can move it around as needed for working on my project...
- Also bought a few LED light tubes that I will be putting up to make sure I have more than adequate lighting once I start...

Thoughts:
* At current Im liking the Lexus 3uz motor, nice torque and sound. But then I saw a v12 for sale...
- So now my mind is running again... But still have some time to finalize this...
- But think no matter what I choose it will stay NA, and possibly add the NOS? will see.

* As for the actuators I think I will decide once I get to the outer body stage if I will try get them functional or not.

* As for the rear Diff, Im thinking of going with the Iveco Daily diff...
- Already a duel wheel setup with disc brakes and can handle the weight with no issues. Obviously I will add the supports and bracing to assist regardless.
- Another reason would be that they are available locally and if I do need any parts or spares it wont bee too much of an issue... If I import a unit then I would face potential problems with parts and time delays in getting parts to me.

* As for the rims, Ive gotten a few quotes locally for widening them and not too bad...
- But then again I have found a supplier in the US that has the correct size barrels in the correct widths for the front and back rims... Just needs inners...
- So my sister is back in LA and was thinking of buying and shipping to her and then once I have a few things together, do one shipment back to me, instead of a few small shipments.

More thoughts to follow soon...

Thanks Vertigo.

Yeah any baby steps are always better than no steps...
Im still a while away from starting with the actuall build as i want to get everything else done first so that i dont have any distractions or things that would take up my time unnecessarily once i start...

Hey Vertigo.

Yeah Ive made a bit of progress, but not as much as I would have liked...
After I bought the pickup I had a bit of issues with the paperwork, and got that sorted out, then the back water pipe broke and I ran bearings on the crank...
So I sent the vehicle in to a workshop to sort out and replaced the motor as It was cheaper and quicker to do it that way.
Then as I got it back from the workshop there just more issues that started...
Power steering pump was leaking, oil cooler for the gearbox was mounted with zip ties , battery bracket was not put back, wiring was not done properly and had a few pieces that were exposed and not sealed, radiator brackets broken and the list goes on...
So after a few back and forth trips to the workshop and still not getting things done right, I just started doing it myself and got things done correctly once and for all. Then once on the road, the front water pipe gave issues and the brakes went, but everything is sorted out now and running smoothly again.

Ok so now for the actual update part:

- The actual build:
* Ive been shopping around and went to go and look at a few Rear Diffs for the build and found some options:
(Remembering that the Dana 60 units are like chickens teeth here)
>Looked at the Iveco Daily unit and looks good. Its a duel wheel setup with Disc brakes already and parts available relatively easy to come by.
>Also had a look at a Toyota 2ton truck unit that is also a duel setup. These are cheaper than the Iveco units and slightly bigger in actual size but would need a disc conversion (Not sure if would be possible). So would probably cost the same in the end.
>Last one I saw was a Dana 44 unit from a Jeep also with disc brakes but single wheel setup...
>Im looking at what we have locally that comes as close as possible to the Dana 60 Unit in regards to size and dimensions.

With this info thus far Im still leaning towards the Iveco option at the moment. And all three above have a similar ratios so not like that would be an issue either. Then again its not a 1/4 mile car...

Preparation for the build:
* All the parts from the donor car have been cleaned, sorted and boxed. Im just now busy making a list of what I have in what box so I can seal the boxes, label them with item list and pack away until needed.

* Got the prints done for my frames, and just waiting for them to be laminated, so that i can put them up.

Other:
* Now that i have a spare 3uz motor Im in 2 minds. I went and had a look at a Chevy 350 from a engine builder and looks good... Did a bench test and runs well.
>But I also went and looked at the Lexus v12 unit and its only about 15cm longer than a v8 and same width... But from what I have read up on and seen, they have some nice torque figures from 1000 rpm, And that could be useful with the 44's considering I want to stay NA. And there are aftermarket management systems available so that is covered.
>Again, I will do a bit more search and go see the guys again before I buy.

* The current plan is to get the Diff or the Engine by December. And if all goes well then both...

* The electrical guys will be around in the next week or so to fit the new lighting for me then that is done.

* Ive been in contact with Interco directly for the tires and just waiting for the final costs to get them shipped to my closest port. Ive looked at Ebay, Amazon and one or two off road companies but of course they have more markup as they are a middleman.

Thoughts:
* I think I may have found the correct size tanks for the rear section, but will go see them later in the week to confirm.

* As for the rims, I will only get to that once I have the Diff.

* Also got a few prices on steel and CNC laser cutting so at least I have that side covered and ready to go.

More to follow... [Burn] [Tumbler]

That seems perfectly normal to me. But I'm an old country boy.
