Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) Panel

Today, my IFF/SSR Panel scrounged out of a RAF Tornado arrived. Of course, the first thing I did was play with the switches and knobs. I then started to take it apart for a thorough cleaning and weight reduction effort. I first removed the rear cover which is simple held on with a Dzus fastener. Next I removed the panel lights, knobs and push buttons. After that, I pulled off the front faceplate and then started to cut out the wiring harnesses I am not planning to use. I then pulled all the switches, rotary controls and light/pushbutton receptacles from the baseplate, and finally removed the rotary number block. I am going to put this panel in the lower portion of the dash where the NAV panel was, as I will have some secret switching on it to lock out the Weapon Station Control Panel functions.

Main Breaker Panel

While we were getting dumped with rain from the far edge of the Hurricane, I decided to spend an hour and take apart my B757 Breaker Panel which I will taylor to my build. For the Breaker Panel, I first removed the leftover wire harness. I then removed the existing breakers, breaker hole covers, and hardware. Lastly I drilled out some rivets and removed the guard bars and angled lower marking plate. Time to sand everything down and start making up some paint templates for Adam to cut up. I think I will mount three large old school lever type breaker arms in the areas of the three lower gaurded spaces. Now if I can just find a scrap MCDU that will fit my Andromeda MFD nicely.

Some really cool gadgets there. How do you find the aircraft parts?

Slysnake,

For those who don't know me, I'm obviously an aircraft guy, if fact, my Company, Catalina Aircraft is the FAA and Transport Canada Type Certificate Holder for the 28-5ACF (PBY) Catalina seaplane, which is a Transport Category (commercial airliner) class of aircraft. What that means is we are the Design Authority, and are now considered the "manufacturer". Lots of responsibility considering we still have a couple dozen Cats flying around the world.

Some of the parts, I source through visits to my customers, as they have access to scrap birds on their fields. Some I pick up off Ebay. For instance, I spotted the IFF/SSR panel on Ebay in the UK, and just clicked buy it now for a very fair price. What I look for is the correct panels as well as panels that offer the "look" I want, to fill the space where there is currently a less than desirable looking panel. Then I just tear them apart, declutter them, lighten them up and paint/remark them the way I want them to look (which is more aviation correct than some of the original hero panels, though not screen correct). I've got a couple more panels I am waiting on arrival to repurpose. Just having a little fun here...

USAF Crash Fire Rescue EJ Seat Harness Cutter

Today, I receive a little surprise in the mail from a retired USAF Crash Fire Rescue Team member. This tool is used to help break/clear residual canopy debris and cut the Ejection Seat harness to extricate a stuck or incapacitated Pilot. I can confirm that both he and his tool have saved a few lives over their careers. I will be honored to make a custom mount for this tool to proudly sit visible in the cockpit of my build.

Yep, very cool. Thanks for the interesting information. You are fortunate to have an "in" to these types of things.

Slysnake,

Basically parts sourcing is a lot of scratchin' each other's backs. Just look at what some of the long time members have accomplished identifying parts.

I have some colleagues on a vintage supersonic bomber project in the UK, to which several parts are believed to be sourced from. With a little charm, the mention of our caped Mentor's car, and the possibility of them being infamous with a very very small group of people on this forum, I am hoping that the chaps across the pond will figure things out for me and provide Illustrated Parts List pages showing the various pieces, what they are really called, what their Part Numbers are, what their Next Higher Assemblies are, and what they really came off.

I am also thinking about getting a small 5 axis for the house, just to be able to whip stuff up on a whim. I found a really nice desktop sized unit that is "cheap$" in 5 axis terms, but has limited machining footprint capability, which would ultimately limit my desired capability. Trying to keep things small enough so I can keep it at home so I don't have to fight for access time.

Windshield Heat Panel

I just got back from a trip to a customer out west. While out there I managed to pick up a cute little Pitot Heat panel from a decommissioned SIM. This panel has some awesome AC amp meters as well as a 3-way pushbutton assy. I'm going to repurpose this as a Windshield Heat panel, as a car as cool as this should, in theory, have heated windshields for those 300mph excursions.

I'm planning to flip the panel upside down, and then flip the amp meters right side up, move the toggle switches down, put some indicator lights where the toggles originally were and then trim the faceplate to allow for an even looking 4 dzus pins and repaint accordingly. The backing plate will also be trimmed to separate the 3-way pushbutton assy for mounting elsewhere in the cockpit with a newly fabricated faceplate of its own. Pics of the orig unit and proposed below;

So, this is a first, definitely not specifically related to my build, but sorta, and damn funny!

We did a walk-through of a potential property on the mainland a while back and liked it. I especially liked it because the garage had two bays that were 13x24 feet each and a third bay that was 14x38 feet with an additional garage door on the back side wall. The most appealing part of this third bay was the fact that the front garage door is big enough to drive my 22 foot long, 9 foot tall "Zeus" in, even with my 5" front wheel spikes installed. And the garage ceiling is over 11 feet tall, so installing 4 post lifts is not going to be a problem. BTW if you are thinking about a 4post lift, check out "Wildfire Lifts", they have some nice stuff, including a double wide. I figure with 2 single lifts and a double lift, I can get Zeus and up to 8 cars in there in a pinch.

But that's not the funny part. Today we did inspections. And as the home inspector was doing his thing, he checked out the mechanicals of the private pooper room located within the master bathroom. Next thing I hear is "WHOA, now that is awesome - I gotta get a picture of this!". Curious, I stuck my head in wondering what the hell he was talking about and come to discover that if you fully enter the private room and close the door, you can see sitting on the front wall across from the toilet (which is normally blocked by the cracked open door) there is a friggin URINAL! I looked at him, said damn didn't see that first time though, and well, I really want this house now!

Needless to say, the mrs. is not happy that there is a urinal in "her" master bathroom and she has to look at it while doing her business. I offered to build a theater like curtain with draw string to cover it, and even saloon doors as an option too. I got a very evil eye. So, as a compromise, I have offered to move it to my soon to be awesome bat themed garage, where it should have been in the first place.

Now if I could just get her to admit that women poop.....
