Well here it is March 1 and surprise, surprise I am behind schedule. Taking care of my Dad's estate has taken a lot of time this month. Anyway, I do have some progress to report.

Batmobile

This may not seem like much but believe me, it is huge. This is the Y gantry with the Z carriage attached and ready to be installed on the X table. The Z carriage took the most work. Tolerances are very tight and everything has to line up just right for it to work.

After it's put on the X table everything will need to be zeroed in and the electronics will go on.

Update:

The gantry is installed on the table. All the lead screws are in place but not yet aligned. Starting to get close to first movements.

Next is the install of the stepper motors and the electronics. I have purchased a laptop to run the software and have the Mach3 program and license. The laptop is usable because the plug and play electronics came with smooth stepper so only the Ethernet port is needed.

Outstanding work. What is the depth of travel for your Z axis?

Maximum travel is about 9". But The router collar and the length of the bit will reduce the actual workable distance. I had hoped to mill 3 or 4 inch foam, but I guess the thickest foam that is readily accessible in home stores is 2 inches.

I have seen purple 1" thick foam sheets from Home Depot glued into a 6 inch thick laminate and milled. vertigo

It's Alive!

Completed the machine, installed the motors, the electronics, and the software. Today I was able to jog all three axis' and everything looks great. Now just need to fine tune the lead screws and it should be good to go. Had to wait an extra week because one of the lead screws the company sent me was bent so had to wait for a replacement.

I'll try to make a video and post it up in the next couple of days. Probably will try to do a couple of pre-made projects to learn more about how this thing functions before I try any bat related projects. But I am pretty excited about the possibilities.

Congratulation.
Sounds like good times ahead.
Will be looking forward to seeing what Bat Creations you can create with your machine. vertigo
