Progress report:

I started working on the rear axle cover this past week but shifted my attention to the rear wheels and rear wheel fenders/covers this weekend. Spent quite a bit of time measuring and sketching out the pieces. Started fabricating and constructing them today.

Even with the 10% reduction in size I am using, the tires are 20 inches wide!! The entire wheel assembly will be 24 inches wide per side. It's going to be a challenge to keep it within the 8' 6" desired width, but may be possible if I can tuck the assemblies behind the car enough. Otherwise I will need to adjust the wheel width.

hey sly,
Sounds like an aggressive plan of action.
What diameter are the rear wheels?
Will be looking forward to seeing your current action plan take physical form. vertigo

With the 10% reduction the ideal diameter would be 44 1/4 inches. I haven't checked to see if any wheels actually have these dimensions.

Sly,

“With the 10% reduction the ideal diameter would be 44 1/4 inches. I
haven't checked to see if any wheels actually have these dimensions.”

The Interco SAM-43 Super Swamper does and they are DOT approved. These
are the same rear tires on my Tumbler.

How tall are these tires?
Interco list them as 44” tall  x  18.5” wide

One factory spec sheet refers to a Tire Diameter Range:
44.0-44.99 inches in diameter

At 70 degrees cold, the tire is 44.0 inches tall.

Once the tire starts rolling, and/or the environment temperature
increases the tire diameter will expand. Throughout the operational
range the tire is not supposed to expand more than an inch in
diameter.

There is no factory information on the range of width expansion
throughout the operational range.

But, several major off road forums report the maximum side width
expansion variation as 1-inch from 70 degrees cold to 125 degrees.

Yeah, after we talked about it last time I went and looked at what was available and saw those. I think they even had a 19.5 width version. These would be great because they also have them in the smaller size that will be needed for the fronts. Plus, they fit normal US standard rims. The original flotation tires only fit an exotic Euro/skip loader type rim.

I think this is a fall back if I can't get the original style tires to work. I am still not giving up on that.

Finished one of the big proxy rear wheels today and cut out the parts for the other one. Found some diamond pattern rubber mat at harbor freight for cheap that looks great as the tread. The shear size of it is awesome.

Still working on the rear fender wheel covers. They are proving tricky. Pix coming soon.
