Looking at 4 different designs used by 4 different builders for the front steering and have
already decided on 1-1/2 " diameter steering shafts. Also designing my rear wheels for the 4 rear tires.
Still have about 6-weeks before I get the custom order wheels for the front tires. When I started the original researching for my Tumbler I spent a few thousand to obtain the best three sets of plans available for the Tumbler. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. The current rear axle I have has WMS measurement of 58" so I will probably have to buy a different rear axle of at least 72" between WSMs.
Hardest part for me is finding an hour a day to physically work in my Tumbler build. vertigo

A couple of years back I studied Big Wave Dave’s travels, adventures,
problem solving, and construction issues in setting up his Rumbler
rear axle and tires. And in a moment of later arrogance and deficiency
of perceived necessary knowledge, I still made the blunder of buying
my rear axle before solving the dually spacing and adapter problems,
having failed to sufficiently grasp all the important details within
his posts on this matter. I have since re-studied his tire and rear
axle posts in great detail with the result that I found most
everything needed to do this part of the build correctly. For this
knowledge, I am very grateful to Big Wave Dave.
Lessons learned from all this:
Number One: The Tumbler is a Bat Vehicle that one needs to buy the
rear tires for first and then solve the dually spacing and adapting
issues before buying the rear axle.
Number Two: Buy a cheap 16.5” diameter X 12” wide steel wheel, install
it in one of the tires, and inflate to the proper pressures. I have
ordered one and will do after I receive it and my tires.
Note: You will not be able to get accurate measurements without
following this step. It is the only way to accurately measure for
changes in tire expansion characteristics due to inflation.
Note: In this case a proxy tire is not the preferred method for dually
tires because of the unpredictable expansion characteristics due to
inflation.
Number Three: Use these carefully recorded measurements to draw two
detailed tires/wheels in profile and scale of your choice.
I plan to draw two in 1:1 scale on cardboard and cut them out.
This way I can move them around to get the spacing I want on the real
tires to be and once in position they will make it a lot easier to
design and measure for my wheel adaptors or other methods of spacing
and axle mounting.

Been spending a lot of my time looking for the right rear axle and
wheels. The most important thing that I have learned from searching
for the right wheels and axles is that the most common heavy duty axle
and wheel bolt pattern is 8 on a 6.5" bolt circle. Almost every
factory steel wheel is available in this bolt pattern and it is the
most common bolt pattern found on axles from 250, 2500, 350, 3500,
etc., etc., pickup trucks. vertigo

Bought a re-manufactured rear axle with all new internal parts for my Tumbler.
GMC 14 bolt rear axle assembly with 4.56 ratio, 10.5 inch ring gear, 8 lug, single wheel, with Detroit Locker.
Rough measurements for the the axle: wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface: 67 inch; backing plate to backing plate: 51 inch; center spring perch to center spring perch: 40 inches. Weight: approximately 550 lbs. This is a real beast and something the Tumbler was deserving of all along. Should be delivered to me in around 10-days. vertigo
Full-Floating GM 14-bolt
The 14-bolt is the king of cheap beef when running tires up to and
more than 44 inches tall. You can't deny the strength of the 10
1/2-inch ring gear, huge 30-spline pinion, and 1 1/2-inch, 30-spline
axle-shafts. It also enjoys a decent number of aftermarket gear ratios
and differentials. The fact that it has a removable pinion support and
spanner adjustable backlash makes 14-bolt gear and differential swaps
relatively easy. It can be found in GM 3/4- and 1-ton trucks and vans
in a few different widths. Perhaps its only real weakness is
the thin tinfoil-like diff cover.

Received my GM 14 bolt axle today.
I thought my Dana 60 was a big axle.
Here is a photo image for comparison of the two axles.
Got a good deal but the company also had rebuilt the 13.9"drum brakes with new parts
instead of refitting it with disk brakes.
So, I'm pretty sure that I will be refitting it myself with disk brakes.
My rear wheels will be 16.5" diameter so drum brakes would be a pretty tight fit.

Vertigo's Tumbler Build Update: Projected close range work.
1. Will be adding and welding in more structural steel tubing to back end of Tumbler.
2. Have ordered 2" X 1/4" wall DOM steel tubing, heavy duty 4-link hemi end axle suspension kit, heavy
duty axle truss, and associated hemi end connection brackets/mounts.
3. Have ordered 4-rear 44" Interco SAM-43 Super Swamper tires. Back ordered until 1-MAY-2017.
4. Waiting for 2 custom built front wheels. Expected delivery early June-2017.
5. Once Super Swamper 44" Interco tires arrive will mount one on a single mount wheel and inflate to proper
pressure and use to get accurate measurements before finalizing design for custom rear wheels.
6. Once design for rear wheels is finalized will order custom wheels and expect delivery in a month or so.
7. Will also probably end up refitting the GM 14 bolt axle with disk brakes.
This should be enough to keep me busy for a while. vertigo
